How often do you go to sleep thinking about the cup of coffee you are going to have the next day? It has a lot to do with how much of a coffee drinker you are and the quality of the coffee you chose to drink. There are some important tips to having a consistently good cup of coffee every morning, and why not get your day off to the best start possible? There has also been studies by a wide breathe of researcher to determine if coffee is good or bad for you. It may depend on the studies you chose to read and accept. However, there seems to be a consistent message that confirms the pro’s do out weigh the con’s. But what are the pro’s and con’s we will get to that real soon. However, let’s talk a bit more about how you improve the start of everyday with a great cup of coffee. First things first, coffee does have a shelf life and the best properties of a good cup of coffee can be loss if the coffee is not fresh. This usually means the freshest coffee beans you can find, stored and brewed to assure the coffee yields the best result each and every-time. While coffee sold in bulk may seem like a great money saver be careful because the trade off in a number of cases will be that great tasting cup of coffee you crave. You always want to purchase fresh coffee that has been packaged and sold in sturdy, vacuum- sealed bags
Exposure to the air is one of coffee’s worst enemy’s and ultimately yours, so always store it is airtight containers. You might consider the refrigerator as a good source to preserve your coffee but not if you don’t want it to taste like everything you might have in the fringe because like arm and hammer it will absorb moisture and food odors…not a good idea.
Looking for a great cup of coffee than you should focus on a 100% pure Arabica bean coffee that will in most cases state the country and origin. While many subscribe to a commercial brand which in itself is not a bad coffee but there are factors you must consider when you make that choice, what is done to create volume, and the age of the grinded coffee bean plays a part in the quality and taste of the coffee.
The grinding of a coffee bean has an immediate impact on the quality going forward. The sooner you brew the coffee after it is grinded the better the taste of your coffee. Most stores provide coffee in grinded and whole bean so you have a choice. They usually have a grinder in the store so you can do it yourself. There are also inexpensive blade grinders on the market that will do a decent job of getting it done.
After making the right coffee choice and grinding the coffee as fine as your brewer will allow the next major attribute is using good water to get a great tasting coffee. The use of filter water or bottled spring water is essential to the overall experience. In addition to filtered water the filters you use are also important since the coffee will be filtered by whatever you buy and cheaper filters tend yield a less than good tasting coffee. You want to look for a oxygen-bleached or dioxin-free paper filter or if your brewer will accommodate go for a gold-plated re-useable filter. Use the suggested amount of coffee to get the best from your brewer a standard rule of thumb being about 2 level tablespoons for a 6 oz cup of coffee and add another ¾ tablespoon for a 8 oz cup. The proper brewing temperature for coffee is about 200 F which is a below boil temperature of 212 F. Most brewer are set up this way to provide the correct temperature for a consistent cup of coffee so not an area you have to be overly concerned about. However, reheated, day old and overcooked coffee will not yield a good tasting coffee even with the best coffee.
Be sure to keep your coffee containers and grinders clean of oily build up with the recommended cleaner and a strong solution of vinegar is a good way to do it.
The great debate continues on weather coffee is good for you or not a good question considering given the world wide consumption of coffee is on an upward trend. If you check out the most recent news in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry that suggest coffee studies would indicate it lower cholesterol, risk of type 2 Diabetes and heart disease.
While I don’t want to appear to be a medical expert on the subject I do want to bring these possibilities to your attention and suggest you do your own research on the subject. Why because these studies depend on a number of factors that may or may not apply to you. The other interesting note is that after all the studies to date there is still not a clear understanding of why these benefits occur. The fact that coffee is high in antioxidant is believed to play a part into the positive results. While there are positive attributes the down side of drinking coffee tend to be related to the caffeine content of coffee which in itself tends to be higher in non-Arabica bean coffees. Excessive caffeine has been linked to increased irritability, headaches and insomnia. So while the studies may not be totally conclusive on the ability of coffee to prevent certain illnesses the news tends to be more good than bad across the board. So as they say in moderation, one or two cups a day could help keep the doctor away which is a good thing if you are a coffee drinker.
